Makeni, SIERRA LEONE – Sierra Leone’s senior men’s national team, the Leone Stars, has surged five places in the latest FIFA-Coca Cola World Rankings, marking a significant milestone in the country’s football journey.
After holding steady at 129th in November and December 2024, the team has now soared to 124th, fueled by a strong showing in two crucial international fixtures. The rise comes on the back of a thrilling 3-1 triumph over Guinea-Bissau and a hard-fought 1-0 defeat against African giants Egypt in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers last month.
The victories have not only boosted morale but also pushed Sierra Leone’s total points from 1,132 to 1,140, leapfrogging nations like Congo, Gambia, Gabon, and Rwanda in the Confederation of African Football (CAF) standings. Globally, the team now sits ahead of 86 other countries, including Cyprus and Malaysia.
While football powerhouses Argentina, France, Spain, England, and Brazil continue to dominate the top spots, Sierra Leone’s upward trajectory signals growing momentum under head coach Mohamed Kallon.
“This is just the beginning,” Kallon declared. “Our eyes are set on making history—qualifying for Sierra Leone’s first-ever World Cup. Every match, every point counts, and the players are ready to fight for it.”
With crucial World Cup 2026 qualifiers against Guinea-Bissau and Djibouti looming in September, the Leone Stars are expected to fine-tune their strategy in upcoming international friendlies. Fans across the nation are rallying behind the team, hopeful that this rise is a sign of greater triumphs to come. ARW/12/4/2025
