Chandigarh: The Election Department of Chandigarh has taken a unique initiative to decorate the polling booths to represent five themes that showcase the city's rich cultural and architectural heritage. To encourage voter participation, the Chandigarh election department has decided to set up five theme-based polling booths for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
The five themes include architectural heritage of Chandigarh, Rock Garden, Chandigarh-The Beautiful City, Indian Airforce (IAF) Heritage Museum and Gardens and Roundabouts of Chandigarh.
The department has planned to decorate the booths with colourful artworks, cultural motifs and decors, that aim to create a vibrant and engaging atmosphere for the voters.
Le Corbusier's renowned architectural designs will be on display at the "Architectural Heritage of Chandigarh" booth, which will be located in the Gymnasium Hall of the Punjab Engineering College (PEC), Sector 12.
The Rock Garden themed booth featuring replicas of the garden's sculptures will be set up at the Motiram Arya Senior Secondary School. The rich history of the IAF will be showcased by the IAF Heritage Museum at the Government Model High School, Sector 31. Most of the IAF officers reside in this sector, hence this theme was especially planned to motivate the officers to cast their vote. The Heritage Centre set up in Sector 18 has 8 major attractions including aircraft models, and weapon displays but their biggest attraction however is its flight simulator.
The Guru Nanak Public School will be adorned with the beauty of ‘Gardens and Roundabouts of Chandigarh’ theme focusing on the city's extensive green network and unique landscapes which contribute to the city's greenery.
Vinay Pratap Singh, the district election officer cum deputy commissioner said, “The election department hopes that these themed booths will not only boost voter turnout but also educate residents about the city’s rich history and culture. We encourage everyone to visit these booths, cast their vote, and enjoy the experience.”
For the first time ever, the department will also set up 10 polling booths that will entirely be managed by differently abled people and youth. The department has decided to set up these booths in areas which faced low voting turnouts previously.
The ‘pink booths’ will be set up again following the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. These are all women polling booths and are managed by women only.
