With most if not all of the global racing series suspended or canceled, the high-adrenaline, high-speed chases on tracks and elsewhere have moved online. For the first time in history, the bulk of pedigree drivers joined amateur racers in virtual environments, replacing the cockpit of their cars for big screens.
There are a number of virtual racing series currently being held globally, including Formula 1, and probably more are to come. The newest addition to the roster is the Skoda Motorsport eChallenge that will begin on April 22 and will run for five days.
Also known as Rally Argentina, the event is part of the DiRT Rally 2.0 game and will be open to anyone willing to attend (provided they are registered DiRT game players), regardless of gaming platform used: PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.
The virtual car that would be driven as part of the competition is a Fabia Rally2 evo. Each driver would compete against other wannabe racers, but also against professional drivers. This last category includes Pontus Tidemand (2017 FIA WRC2 champion), Chris Ingram (European Rally champion), Martin Ko i (Slovakian Rally champion), and Oliver Solberg (Skoda World Rally Championship driver).
However, according to Skoda, the man to beat would be Petr Semerád, “one of the most experienced Czech competitors in the virtual world of DiRT Rally 2.0.”
Skoda does not specifically say what the best of the participants would win, apart from “attractive prices” - most likely a typo in the official press release that stands for prizes.
Rally Argentina is a round of the World Rally Championship. It was supposed to take place this week in Villa Carlos Paz in the Cordoba province of Argentina. As many other events of its kind, it will not take place in real life, at least for now – the official status of the race is postponed.
