Xbox One Backwards Compatibility list CELEBRATION - 400 Xbox 360 games now playable

Microsoft has added another four classic Xbox 360 titles to the ever expanding Xbox One backwards compatibility library this week with Community manager Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb delivering the news on Twitter.

But even more remarkable is that now the service has over 400 backwards compatible games available.

In 2016 games like Red Dead Redemption, the Bioshock trilogy, the Mass Effect trilogy, and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion were added. While in 2017 the biggest release so far has undoubtedly been Call of Duty: Black Ops 2.

And this week Xbox announced that Red Faction: Armageddon, Tomb Raider Underworld, Raiden IV and Gyruss have been added.

On top of this, Red Faction: Armageddon is also free to download next month thanks to the Xbox Games with Gold August 2017 lineup of games, which was also announced earlier this week.

Recently Microsoft also revealed together with 343 Industries that Xbox 360 games Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST, Halo 4, and Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary will all be made playable on Xbox One, but so far there's still no word on the release date.

Thankfully when these games do launch, they will also come with all DLC packs thrown in for free to download too.

Finally, the games will also support cross-generation LAN connections, meaning that you can connect an Xbox 360 and an Xbox One together to play some local multiplayer.

As fans might know, at  Microsoft's E3 2017 conference Xbox boss Phil Spencer announced the news that Original Xbox games were finally coming to the Xbox One backwards compatibility service, something he'd been teasing for quite some time.

Speaking to Giant Bomb immediately after the announcement Spencer said that the lineup of Original Xbox games "won't be as big as Xbox 360,” which is supposedly related to music rights in some games.

However, more recently Spencer shed a little more light on some key features that won't work when playing these original Xbox games.

“Most OGXbox games didn’t have [widescreen],” Spencer said when asked on Twitter.

“Can’t really easily change the frame buffer aspect ratio on a shipped game from [backwards compatibility].”

“We run the OG code, so the game will support what the original game supported,’ Spencer explained in a follow-up tweet.

Likewise, new Xbox Live achievements won't be coming either, since according to Spencer doing so would require patching every game, which is never going to happen.

Currently, Crimson Skies and Fuzion Frenzy are the only Xbox games with confirmed backwards compatibility support.

Looking towards the future, Xbox One fans hoping for that original Xbox experience will be able to get their hands on a modernised version of the old school Duke controller.

Accessory manufacturer Hyperkin will be charged with bringing back the original Xbox controller for the Xbox One, Xbox One S and Xbox One X.

Currently, the oversized Xbox controller is scheduled to arrive with a holiday 2017 release date.

Likewise, Spencer has also confirmed that first and third-party original Xbox games would be backwards compatible and that the games would be available digitally and on disc for Xbox One players.

That said, these new additions won't be arriving until much later this year, but already two games are confirmed as on the way, including Crimson Skies and Fuzion Frenzy.

In addition, Xbox One X will greatly improve those older Xbox games according to the Xbox hardware team, who say Xbox users existing library of games will run "smoother, look better and load faster" on Microsoft's new flagship console.

In more positive news, Xbox Game Pass launched on June 1st with 100+ Games and while the stand out titles come from the Xbox One catalogue, it also features plenty of Xbox 360 games playable thanks to Microsoft's backwards compatibility feature.

"On Thursday, June 1st, Xbox Game Pass will be available for all users. That means anyone with an Xbox Live account can start their 14-day free trial and play over 100 games," a Microsoft Spokesperson told Daily Star Online.

"We know that a gaming subscription service is only as good as its catalogue of titles, so we’re also excited to share the full lineup of Xbox One and Backward Compatible Xbox 360 games that will be available through Xbox Game Pass."

If you're not willing to buy the Xbox 360 games outright on the store, Xbox Game Pass could be the perfect solution.

Just make sure the Xbox 360 game you want to play is available as part of the subscription at the time.

One month in another Xbox 360 game was added to the service in the form of racer, Monaco: What's Your Is Mine and in August Metal Slug XX will also be added.
