REVEALED: The original Xbox inventor has shared some never before seen pictures

If you thought the controller from the original Xbox was a giant monstrosity then you really haven't seen anything yet.

The creator of the original Xbox, Seamus Blackley, yesterday took to Twitter to share a few lost sketches showing the early controller designs from the original Xbox dating back to 1999.

Unsurprisingly the controller designs take inspiration from the Sega Dreamcast, which despite it's commercial failure was seen as the coolest console on the market at the time.

As Blackley says, the Dreamcast “was King” back then, so designers took cues where they could.

Whilst sharing Blackley also revealed where the Xbox name came about and how it was simply derived from the Graphics API Direct X.He told fans that initially the console was dubbed "Direct X box," and was "a device designed just to run graphics and sound."

And apparently this not so catchy name nearly stuck. Nearly.

In the end the original Xbox was released by Microsoft in November of 2001 and that decision went on to sell more than 24 million units, becoming one of the most successful and popular consoles in the history of gaming.
