Teenager meets his idol in South Shields

Promoter Joeanne McHugh of South Tyneside said: "We helped 16-year-old Sean Pearson meet his idol last week. Sean has been seriously ill and constantly in and out of hospital. He is on over 100 tablets a day and has been fighting to try and regain control of his life after being severely ill.

"We suprised Sean backstage to meet his idol at EPW Wrestling at South Shields at Temple Park. We are looking to help others meet their heroes at local events."

Organiser Dawn Hardy-Smith of West Jesmond said: "A night of live music by The Mirrors, The Rockabilly Rebels, Kyle Jackson and Amber Wilson is taking place on Saturday, February 27 at Jesmond Royal British Legion.

"My friend had a baby born with TOF and a CHD. I followed updates everyday on Facebook sending support to Evie, Greg and Jill. My daughter was born three-and-a-half months after Evie, fit and healthy. I was heartbroken to see the circumstances endured by Evie and her family."

Raising money for: Help my parents dog get a life-saving operation

Fundraiser Helen Pottage of Washington said: "Maori is a Doberman-Rottweiler cross and is five years old. She has a congenital back problem which is causing the disc at the top of her spine and the bottom of her neck to crumble. This is pressing on her spinal cord which is making all four of her limbs not work.

"She has been to see Noel Fitzpatrick from Channel 4's Supervet and he is making her a new disc. I am trying to fundraise for my dad and step-mum as the operation will cost about £10k. Stanley community building secures funding

Raising money for: The Activity Den

Director Lauren Gowland of Stanley said: "The Activity Den in Stanley has secured £16,000 in funding from Durham County Council for building renovations.

"Saved from closure in 2010, a complete set of new double glazed windows is one of the last parts of a complete revamp for the community building and its young people and volunteers. For more information visit www.theactivityden.org.uk or find us on Facebook.

"I started attending The Den as a child, and have grown up with it to become a member of the management team. The Den aims to improve the lives of children in Stanley and the surrounding areas, and provides youth clubs, trips and opportunities for young people."

Raising money for: Plan UK

Assistant media officer for Plan UK Amy Woodyatt said: "Newcastle High School for Girls will hold the Regional Supporter Event on February 23 to celebrate efforts of local Plan supporters. Funds raised aided Plan’s work in helping some of the world's poorest children fulfil their potential. Plan UK is part of Plan International, a children’s charity addressing education, disaster relief and girls’ rights across Asia, Africa and Latin America."

Headteacher Hilary French says: "The work that Plan does with disadvantaged girls and women speaks directly to all of us at Newcastle High School for Girls. It is a privilege for us to be able to host an event in school to thank Plan supporters in the area."

Raising money for: Caring for Kian

Fundraiser Louise Yellop of Leam Lane said: "We held a charity football match for local lads, Newcastle v Sunderland on Saturday, February 20 at Leam Rangers football club, Leam Lane.

"Myself and Christopher Quigley have been trying to raise funds for Kian throughout his battle with cancer. Christopher also battled cancer as a child and feels very strongly and passionate about helping Kian."

Slimming world consultant Andy Livingston of Cramlington said: "A post-Christmas chocolate amnesty was held by my two Slimming World groups at the Seahorse pub in Blyth and St Luke's church in Wallsend.

"Members brought in unwanted chocolates which we decided to donate to George's Journey. They created four hampers which were raffled off and raised £520 for the charity.

"George is a ten-year-old boy from Blyth and our Slimming World group decided we would help him as our chosen charity to support. One of our members has close links to his family and we all agreed to help."

Mum Dawn Warnes of Blyth said: "My daughter Chloe Warnes cut her hair short on her 16th birthday on February 13 and also raised £670 for The Little Princess Trust, a charity who take donated hair and make them into wigs for children who have lost their hair through illness.

"Lisa Charlton from Broadway Hair kindly offered to cut Chloe's hair for free. Lisa started Broadway Hair in 2008 and is very passionate about providing a high standard of service. Lisa has recently refurbished her salon and Louise Lisle who is Miss Northumberland Inspirations came along to cut the ribbon to reopen the salon. Broadway Hair raised in total £105."

Committee member Kelly Williamson of Consett said: "We are running clothes, toy, and food banks from Delves Lane, Village Hall. We have a small committee set up, we are run by volunteers, we are funding this ourselves.

"For three years now we have collected donations of clothes, toys and food to support local vulnerable families over the Christmas period. We realised, though meeting the families we are supporting, that there was a need for this help throughout the year so we decided to set up this trust.

"Toys, clothes and food can be donated. Everyone has assess to our banks in exchange for a small donation, all monies raised go back to helping and supporting vulnerable families."

This ‘people-driven care’ event will build upon our work on GP appointments, home care and dental services in the city. With your help we will look at the challenges and way forward for these services, and for urgent care/GP out of hours.
